The National Center for Election Monitoring in Sri Lanka (NCEMSL) has written to the Chairman of the Election Commission today requesting the commission to give a proper assurance whether the election can or cannot be held.
The executive director of the movement, S.B Hearth had in writing requested the election commissioner Nimal Punchihewa to educate political parties, candidates and general public whether the election can be held on the relevant day.
He pointed out that though political parties have started their campaign their actions too are done without a strong drive as there is uncertainty weather the election would be held on the set date.
According to the letter he had also said that the though the election commission’s chairman had said that everything has been prepared for the election, the government printer however claimed that ballot papers have not yet been printed. He also added that the chairman of the election commission too had said that there were no sufficient funds to hold election therefore has requested for funds from treasury.
tThe letter also stated that the treasury secretary too have given an affidavit to courts that there is not enough funds to hold election. In such situation it cannot be believed that sufficient funds would be received when the money is requested. Therefore the election commission, treasury and government should discuss and study the situation and should come to an understanding of time when there is sufficient time to hold an election
