With the final results of 20 of the 22 electoral districts having been released so far, the National People’s Power (NPP) has secured 123 seats, putting the party above the threshold of the 113 seats required for a majority in the 225-seat legislature.
The NPP passed the 113 seat target after winning 16 seats in the Gampaha district.
The party has won 19 of the 20 districts where results have been announced so far. The only district won by a party other than the NPP is Batticaloa, which was won by the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK).
