A total of 412 patients were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital during the two-day holiday period from April 13 and 14 owing to various accidents.
Six of those patients were pronounced dead on admission, Dr. Indika Jagoda, Director of the Hospital's Accident Ward revealed at a media briefing.
He added that 110 of the patients who were admitted had sustained injuries in household accidents while 94 patients were admitted owing to road accidents.
Surgeries had to be performed on about 80 of the patients, he further added.
On the positive side, Dr. Jagoda said the number of patients admitted to the National Hospital due to injuries sustained in accidents related to fireworks continued to decline this year, with just two persons being admitted during the two-day period. Even these patients had not suffered serious injuries.
