Sri Lanka Navy had apprehended 12 individuals during search operations on December 2 and 3, 2024, for engaging in illegal fishing activities in the sea off Nilaveli and along the Punnayadi beach in Trincomalee.
The suspects were found using unauthorized fishing nets and light coarse fishing techniques, both of which are prohibited. The Navy also seized four dinghies, a traditional boat, and various fishing gear used in these illicit activities.
The operations were conducted by the Eastern Naval Command, with SLNS Vijayaba leading efforts in the Nilaveli sea area and SLNS Lankapatuna operating along the Punnayadi coastline.
The apprehended individuals, aged 17 to 51, are residents of Nilaveli, Muthur, and Erakkandi. Following their arrest, they, along with the confiscated items, were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Verugal for further legal action.
