The Navy said it has strengthened surveillance to detect people trying to leave the country illegally.
Navy spokesman Captain Indika De Silva said measures are taken to increase night patrol, deploy more intelligence officers and strengthen monitoring both in land and sea.
Indian media reported that 16 Lankan refugees, including several children from Jaffna and Mannar have reached Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu in two batches. Quoting Tamil Nadu police, Indian media said the refugees were fleeing unemployment as well as the shortage of food in Sri Lanka and about 2000 refugees are to arrive in India.
