Minister of Urban Development and Housing Prasanna Ranatunga is to propose today to the Cabinet on setting up of an Authority to develop islands around the country.
The Authority will be proposed aimed at launching development plans to develop some 60 islands around the country.
Some of the islands will be developed as tourist attractions while the Navy, Coast Conservation department and Police Naval unit will be in charge of security.
Some of the islands will be developed to promote the fisheries industry while others will be used for suitable cultivation purposes
