On the orders of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Ministry of Public Security has directed the Police to set up a new unit at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) that will be dedicated to probing attempts to cause religious disharmony.
The new unit will function as part of the CID's Cyber Crime Division, a senior official said. At present, incidents relating to such attempts are investigated by this division.
The unit will be tasked with looking into incidents aimed at causing communal and religious disharmony and taking action against them under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act.
