Kathiravelu Shanmugam Kugathasan was sworn in as a Member of the 9th Parliament before Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana today (09).
Following the Oath affirmation before the Speaker, the Member signed the Member Roll kept before the Secretary General of the Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera.
Kathiravelu Shanmugam Kugathasan was appointed to fill the vacancy created due to the demise of. Rajavarothiam Sampanthan, a former opposition leader and leader of the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK).
Mr Kugathasan completed his higher education from the university of Colombo and Madurai Kamaraj University, India.
He has been a member of the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi Party since 1975 and has been working as the Trincomalee District Leader of the party since 2018. He has also worked as the Eastern Province Development Affairs Coordinator under the Ministry of National Policy, Economic Affairs and Resettlement, Parliament's Department of Communications stated.
Furthermore, in the previous parliamentary election, he represented the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi and participated for the election representing the Trincomalee district.
The Election Commission published the gazette notification No. 2391/14 regarding the appointment of Mr Kugathasan on 2 July.
