The ' Moon Memorial Museum', will be opened within the Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, on Sunday, September 28, aimed at preserving threatened plant species and plant parts, while spreading scientific information on them to society.
Speaking about the program Ministry of Environment Advisor Dr. Ravindra Kariyawasam said that the museum has been named after Alexander Moon, who in 1824 prepared a list of 1127 endemic plant species in Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, 'the Moon Museum' , will specifically focus on the conservation of plant species and plant parts that are endangered , the exchange of scientific information, the conservation of the genes of plants and the development of studies on genetic resources.
Moreover, the museum will provide information to the public about eco systems related to such plants and create conservation measure for them.
