The remains of nine deceased persons at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday (25), with concerns again being raised over the number of people who were succumbing to the virus at home.
Four of the victims had died at home while five others died at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.
Among the deaths was a 24-year-old youth from Imaduwa who had passed away at home. His body tested positive for COVID-19 after a PCR test conducted at the hospital. Three other males, aged 72, 71 and 55 had also died at home.
Among the victims who died while being treated at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital were 58-year-old woman, an 89-year-old male, and a 68-year-old woman. A 71-year-old woman who had been transferred from the Monaragala Hospital to Karapitiya also died of COVID-19 while being treated there.
Only four the bodies were cremated on Sunday due to no time slots being available at the crematorium. The rest of the bodies were cremated yesterday.
