In 160 of 339 municipal councils, urban councils and Pradeshiya sabhas to which elections were held on Tuesday, no party has a clear mandate to form a majority run council and will need the support of other parties or independent groups.
In all 11 Local Authorities the SJB won, it has fallen short of the 50 % needed to secure a simple majority of seats.
In the local authorities of Jaffna, Mannar, Vavuniya and Nuwara Eliya too there is no clear mandate for any single party.
In the Batticaloa district, in ten out of thirteen local authorities, there is no clear winner, as was also the case three out of four of Mullaitivu’s local authorities. In Puttalam too, nine out of twelve authorities will have to form coalitions.
