State Minister for Livestock Development D. B. Herath announced that, thanks to the farmers’ support, the country has achieved a surplus in rice stocks. Additionally, he highlighted that while the country has currently produced 40% of its milk requirement, efforts are underway to double this output.
Minister Herath made these statements during a press conference held at the Presidential Media Centre on the theme of ‘Collective Path to a Stable Country.
State Minister Herath further commented, “The government has worked diligently to ensure stable food production, addressing potential crises and preventing future shortages. Collaborating with the Minister of Agriculture and farmers, they have achieved a surplus in rice production, alleviating concerns about future food shortages.
Additionally, the Ministry of Livestock has implemented a programme to provide protein to the people, aiming to double liquid milk production from 40% in the previous season. They have also improved the quality and nutritional standards of their cattle and promoted grass cultivation to ensure a consistent food supply for this purpose
