Appreciating the efficiency of the department for decades guarding the Nation, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stressed that there is an urgent need to resolve the pending high profile cases where he said the truth behind them remain history to this day.
"This is not the failure of the police department. I don't believe so. More often that not, such cases are derailed due to political intereferences. This is the reality. Investigations with regard to certain cases were not only obstructed, officials in those investigations were targeted and harassed as well," President said.
Stressing that NPP government will not tolerate retaliation, President Dissanayake said there is a certain belief that cases pending over fifteen years are automatically forigotten or abandoned over the time. "Let me assure you, no crime will be allowed to buried in the sands of time,'
He was speaking at the 159th Anniversary of Sri Lanka Police yesterday ( September 3) where President Dissanayake took part as Chief Guest and Commanders of Tri - Forces and senior Cabinet Ministers taking part as guests at police grounds in Colombo.
President Dissanayake also inspected the ceremonial parade of the police along with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Wijesooriya.
During his speech, IGP Wijesooriya stressed the outstanding work of the police over the past year on its crackdown against dangerous drugs and other narcotic substances. (Pix by M.A. Pushapakumara)
