Two Fisheries Unions in North staged a protest against the ongoing illegal bottom trawling by Indian fishermen in Lankan waters today at Jaffna.
Over 250 persons from two Unions from Point Pedro and Gurunagar demanded that tough actions should be taken against the Indian fishermen who trespass into Lankan waters to engage in fishing. The local fishermen alleged that their livelihood is affected severely due to the bottom trawling practice by Indian fishermen.
The protesters marched towards the Fisheries Department office in Jaffna and handed in a petion and thereafter they proceeded to the Consular General office of India in Jaffna where they handed over another petition urging Indian authorities to take steps to stop Indian fishermen coming into Lankan waters.
