A Chief Inspector of Police serving at the Okkampitiya Police Station was arrested on 29 July 2025 by officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, following a complaint made by a local businessman.
According to the Commission, the officer had allegedly demanded bribes on multiple occasions from a businessman engaged in the sand transport trade in the Gaminipura area, Okkampitiya.
The complainant stated that the officer had initially asked for Rs. 50,000 each time to allow uninterrupted transport of sand by tractor from the sand mining site to the warehouse.
The bribe demand was later allegedly reduced to Rs. 47,000, and then further to Rs. 40,000, reportedly for “helping with the work” of the officer’s newly constructed house.
The arrest was made at approximately 5.00 p.m. on Monday near Weerama Hridiya, along the Maligawila–Monaragala Road. The suspect was subsequently produced before the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court.
The Media Unit of the Bribery Commission confirmed the arrest and ongoing legal proceedings. Further investigations are underway.
