One suspect has been arrested in connection with the discovery of a boat carrying several types of narcotics in Talaimannar last morning.
Navy personnel from the Talaimannar Navy Camp who were on patrol along the beach had observed a suspicious vessel coming ashore in the early hours of last morning. Upon seeing the navy personnel, three persons who had been in the boat had fled.
A search of the vessel with the assistance of the Mannar Sub Unit of the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) revealed 1.3 kilograms of heroin, 4 kilograms of 'Ice' and 5.2 kilograms of 'Hashish' hidden inside the boat.
After an investigation, police were able to identify and arrest a suspect who allegedly aided and abetted the smuggling of the drugs into the country. He was handed over to the Chavakachcheri Police.
The suspect is a 29-year-old resident of Talaimannar. He is due to be produced before court. Talaimannar Police are investigating.
