One person was killed when a car collided with the intercity train bound from Kandy to Colombo this evening near the Yagoda Railway Station.
The car had allegedly disregarded warning bells and had attempted to drive across the railway crossing near the station when it was hit by the train. The impact shattered the vehicle and it was dragged some distance from the crossing and ended up on the platform of the railway station.
The car's sole occupant at the time of the incident was its driver and though he was freed from the wreckage of the vehicle after much effort, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
