Over 400 minor and major irrigaation tanks in Vavuniya have surpassed its peaks, and are overflowing, placing the residents' lives at risk.
District Secretary P.A. Sarathchandra said that out of 639 minor and major irrigaation tanks, 415 are overflowing due to the prevailing heavy rains that have been continuing to pour in the Vavuniya district for several days.
Farmers have suffered a great loss as a large amount of paddy fields cultivated in the highlands of Vavuniya have been flooded.
