At least 50 inmates at the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in Polonnaruwa have escaped from the camp, Police said today (11).
Police have apprehended 102 out of 139 inmates who broke out of the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre during a disturbance involving detained individuals with long-standing drug addiction last evening.
The Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi, said that Police and Army Personnel are in search of 37 more escapees.
“The initial incident occurred around 5:00 pm following which another group of inmates made it out. The center had a total of 484 inmates. Inmates from Negombo, Colombo, and Galle have formed cliques based on their hometowns, attempting to establish control within the rehabilitation center,” he added.
However, residents have reported occasional conflicts at the rehabilitation center among inmates due to many issues.
