Over 800 housing units and 619 shops located in several government flats are in a dilapidated state, the Urban Development Ministry said. Housing units located in Wekanda, Bambalapitiya, Prince of Wales, Siridhamma Mawatha, Kamkarupura, Mihindu Mawatha housing schemes and several buildings in Maligawatte housing scheme will need immediate attention due to lack of maintenance. Ministry Secretary W.S.Sathyananda said the Ministry is planning to consult the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) to conduct testing and issue a technical report on the risks. He said the government is able to take over dilapidated government flats for the purposes of re-construction. The Ministry said the private sector involvement will be sought for the restoration.
