Pandemonium broke out in Parliament today as Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MPs continued to protest against the Speaker's decision to announce that SJB MP Ranjan Ramanayake's seat had fallen vacant.
Mr Ramanayake, who was elected to Parliament from the Gampaha District, is currently serving a four-year prison sentence after being convicted of Contempt of Court.
SJB MPs wore black armbands to protest the Speaker's decision and held a protest in the Chamber holding placards in support of Mr Ramanayake.
However, Government MPs too held up counter signs denouncing the SJB and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
At one point, Speaker Abeywardena had to suspend sittings for about 20 minutes after a heated verbal exchange between Minister Chamal Rajapaksa and Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka almost came to blows.
