Parliament informed the Chairman of the Election Commission that two Parliament seats in the Ninth Parliament fell vacant on 9 August 2024 due to the cancellation of parliamentary seats of MPs Manusha Nanayakkara and Harin Fernando.
Acting General Secretary of the Parliament Chaminda Kularatne wrote to the EC informing of the two vacancies today.
The communication was made in terms of Sections 64(1) and 64(5) of the Parliamentary Elections Act No. 1 of 1981.
The two MPs lost their seats after the Supreme Court held that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya's (SJB) decision to expel Galle District Member of Parliament Manusha Nanayakkara and the National List MP Harin Fernando from the party is legally valid.
The Supreme Court judgment was made after considering the petitions filed by the two SJB members challenging the decision to remove them from their party membership.
