Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena suspended Parliament sittings for 10 minutes a short while ago after opposition MPs protested against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
President Rajapaksa was in attendance during Parliament sessions this morning as Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe briefed the House on the progress of talks between the government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and about the country's current economic situation.
Opposition MPs shouting "Go Home Gota" interrupted the PM while he was speaking. Government MPs meanwhile, responded with chants of "We Want Gota."
Amid shouting from both sides, the Speaker suspended sittings for 10 minutes at the conclusion of the PM's speech.
