Parliament is set to elect a new Deputy Speaker this morning (5).
The post of Deputy Speaker fell vacant with the resignation of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) MP Ranjith Siyambalapitiya. Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced yesterday that the President had accepted Mr Siyambalapitiya's resignation and that a vote will be held today.
The Deputy Speaker can be elected unanimously by the House. In the event two names are proposed for the Deputy Speaker post, the Speaker will hold a secret ballot for the post.
