The Supreme Court has determined that the “Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal)” Bill is not inconsistent with the Constitution and can be enacted by Parliament with a simple majority, Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne announced in Parliament this morning.
The Bill had been challenged in the Supreme Court in terms of Article 121 (1) of the Constitution.
A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court recently concluded hearings into several fundamental rights petitions that were filed challenging the proposed Bill. The Court's determination was then sent to the Speaker.
