The resolution to remove Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon from office in terms of Section 17 of the Removal of Officers (Procedure) Act, No. 5 of 2002, will be taken up for debate in Parliament today.
The debate is due to get underway at 11.30am today and will continue until 4.00pm, with a vote on the resolution set to take place immediately after the debate.
The resolution only needs a simple majority of 113 MPs to vote in favour, for it to pass. Mr. Tennakoon can thereafter be removed from his post by the President.
The resolution to remove Mr. Tennakoon from office was submitted after a Committee of Inquiry appointed to probe charges of misconduct and gross abuse of power unanimously found him guilty of 19 of the 23 charges made against him.
