Pensioners seek opposition support to resolve dispute over anomalies

News

Pensioners have called opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa to campaign on their behalf to gain their demands, after they claimed that the government failed to address their issues through the Budget proposals.

They sought the support of Mr Premadasa when he met with them during a protest they held near the Polduwa Junction, close to Parliament.

The protestors holding placards claimed that anomalies in pension payments for those who retired between 2020 and 2024.

They said that over 154,000 of those who retired during that period have been affected and therefore they have been unable to pay their medical bills among others.

Mr Premadasa later in the day raised their concerns in Parliament and later met with the pensioners for the second time and informed them about the developments in Parliament.

This was the second such group of pensioners who met with Mr Premadasa.

Last week another group of pensioners who faced a similar issue met with the Opposition Leader who in turn raised the issue in Parliament.

The pensioners had retired between 2017 to 2021.

The pensioners claimed that they had lost faith in the government as some of the members who promised to resolve the issue were now with the government, but have not come forward to support them.
