The Court of Appeal today (May 19) decided that the writ petition filed by environmental organizations challenging the exportation of 100,000 Toque Macaque monkeys to China, will be heard on May 26.
The petition was taken up before the Court of Appeal bench consisting of the President of the Court of Appeal Justice Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and Justice A. Marikkar today.
The writ petition was filed by 27 parties, involving the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society of Sri Lanka, Animal Welfare Advocate Otara Gunawardena, Convenor of “Surakimu Sri Lanka” national movement Ven. Ananda Sagara Thero and Conservationist Rukshan Jayawardena, claiming that reports have uncovered that the monkeys are being exported to China for lab-testing purposes.
