A police constable on duty at the Rasnayakapura road block in Puttalam has died after being run over by a van traveling at high speed.
The deceased constable has been identified as A.H.M. Upul Madushanka. He was attached to the Rasnayakapura Police Station.
The constable had been on duty with two others at the road block on the night of April 8 when they had signalled for a van to stop. However, the van had ignored the signal to stop and run over the officers as well as a civilian who was at the roadblock before coming to a stop some distance away.
The injured police officers and the civilian were rushed to the Nikaweratiya Base Hospital but Constable Madushanka, who was in serious condition, succumbed to his injuries.
Two motorbikes belonging to the police officers that were at the roadblock were also run over and severely damaged in the incident.
Police say investigations revealed that the van driver had been under the influence of liquor. He is due to be produced in court,
