Kandy Police have taken into custody a man who set fire to a student who passed the G.C.E. (O/L) exam with all A passes.
A man involved with the underworld was arrested with a grenade in possession, over the incident which took place in the Ampitiya area.
The victim, a student of Berawards College Ampitiya was returning home with his father after a party by his grandmother over the achievement of the student.
The student in a critical state with burn injuries is warded at the Kandy Hospital.
The suspect and another had thrown Kerosene on to the student and set him on fire. The father also had received injuries
After absconding for a day, the suspect was taken into custody.
The suspect was reportedly involved with narcotic dealers.
Residents said that complaints to authorities about drug dealers and illegal activities including illicit liquor sales had been ignored by the Kandy police earlier.
The suspect it to be produced before a Magistrate.
