Police commenced recording statements from Tamil politicians, civil society activists and public for taking part in the recent protest march from Pottuvil and Polikandy which was staged alleging minorities are being oppressed by the government.
A group of police officials from various police stations in North and East recorded a statement from Batticaloa TNA Parliamentarian R. Shanakiyan today at his office.
Mr Shanakiyan was grilled over five hours in his office by police officials.
He was questioned on the basis whether he violated the Court order issued by respective Magistrate Courts and failed to adhere COVID-19 regulations during the protest which saw thousands of people take part across the regions.
Mayor of Jaffna Municipal Council V. Manivannan was also questioned by the police over his role in organizing the protest and a statement was recorded in his office today.
Meanwhile, a 26 year old youth was taken into custody by Point Pedro police for taking part in the protest and later released after a statement was recorded over six hours at the police station. He was tracked by the police through the number plate of this motorbike.
