A Chief Police Inspector in the Panadura area is under investigation for interrupting a protest march by two women in the area on Saturday.
Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that the Director of the Special Investigations Unit has been assigned to carry out the investigation.
He said the investigation will also look into an incident where two policewomen were pushed towards the protesters. The Police officer was seen pushing the two police women to help in arresting the women protesters and to take them to the Police station.
Meanwhile, there has been protests by lawyers and the civil society about disrupting the protest march by two women.
Police arrested five persons related to the protest, but they were given bail on Saturday night.
The women questioned the police, asking them to reason out to stop the protest march, but police could not give a reasonable answer and instead arrested them.
The two women were carrying photographs of Student Convener of Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) Wasantha Mudalige and Ven Galwala Siridhamma thera demanding their release.
The two women resumed their protest from Moratuwa again, but were interrupted by the Police. Later the two women got into a car and arrived at the Galle Face to end their protest.
