Police seek public help to track down foreigners who robbed from ATM machines

News

Police have sought public assistance to track down two foreigners who robbed ATM machines  of a state bank in the southern province and got away with over Rs 10 million.

A group of locals too are being tracked for helping them.

Three machines located in three areas of the Southern province had been robbed last Friday.

The money was consequently taken from three ATMs that belonged to three different branches  located in Hikkaduwa, Karapitiya, and Baddegama, according a senior Police officer in the Southern Province.

Last Friday morning, the two foreigners began their theft at a branch in Hikkaduwa, where a total of Rs. 4,680,000 was taken.

Later, the suspects drove up in a car and stole the cash from the ATM at Karapitiya. The security guard who was on duty at the time noticed their strange behaviour after they were simply seen leaving with a lot of money.

The ATM in Baddegama served as the buglers' final stop, and they stole Rs. 5,700,000.

After carefully examining the way in which the thefts were carried out, the Police believe that the same group is accountable for the thefts in all three cities. The police believe that the suspects had used software to hack the ATM machines.

The CCTV footage from cameras around the ATM machines have been made public, but it was difficult to identify the faces.   However other CCTV footage have been located already.
