A large number of police officers will retire this year creating about 16,000 vacancies, Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickremaratne said.
The IGP has revealed this at the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Public Security held in Parliament recently.
He has also said that 4000 police officers are not at a standard level of health for a long period of time.
Chairman of the Committee Minister Tiran Alles has advised the police department to prepare necessary proposals to terminate the service of police officers who have not fulfilled required medical standards.
The Committee has also discussed incidents of police officers using narcotics.
