Political parties and Trade unions held May Day rallies and processions across the country today with focus on the next week’s Local Government elections.
Opposition parties focused on the ‘failed promises’ of the National People’s Power and called on voters to make use of the next Tuesday’s local election to mark their protest against the government.
The NPP selected the Galle Face green as their May Day venue and speakers called voters to strengthen the government by voting for their party candidates at the local election.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, addressing the May day rally said that on May 6 there would be an opportunity to further strengthen the government by gaining power at the local council level.
He said that at a time when there is no corruption and wastage at the top it was time to have local councils which also have no corruption and wastage.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa called on the public to vote in favour of the SJB at the Local elections and thereby a give warning to the government which has failed to fulfill its promises.
Addressing the party May Day rally at the Thalawakele Palygrounds, Mr Premadasa said it is now clear that the government has failed to keep to its pre-election promises and it was time to give a signal to the government about their failure.
