(UPDATED) – The leader of the ‘Ape Jana Bala Party’, Saman Perera was among five persons shot dead near the Southern Expressway exit point at Beliatta, Tangalle today morning.
Ven Athureliya Rathana thera entered Parliament from the Ape Jana Bala Party at the last election.
A person who had arrived in green colour cab had opened fire at the five persons travelling in a white colour defender, according to eyewitnesses.
Four of them had been killed instantly while the fifth person succumbed to his injuries later.
The Defender vehicle had parked on the road side and some of those in the vehicle had got off when the shooting took place.
Saman Perera was arrested last year in June on allegations of harbouring suspects involved in a murder case and produced in courts.
Meanwhile six police teams have been deployed to investigate the multiple murders in Beliatta, Police Media Spokesperson said.
