Almost all porters withdrew from work in Pettah, Colombo demanding that they wanted higher rates for their work.
The workers said they wanted a five-rupee increase of each item they load and unload due to the high cost of living.
They said currently paid Rs 10 per item was not sufficient and wanted the increase.
As a result business activities in Pettah was disrupted for several hours while some of the traders paid higher rates and got the services of the porters.
