The Government was on the verge of reaching agreement with postal worker unions to end a week long strike by them, but was facing a threat of a strike by doctors tomorrow.
Health and Media Minister Dr Nalinda Jayatissa told journalists that discussions with postal unions to end the strike was successful and they were expecting that the strike will end today.
However postal sector unions said they were awaiting an official letter from the Post Master General regarding the agreements reached before making an announcement on ending the strike.
But, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) today warned that several hospital in the rural areas a facing a threat of closure and have decided to call for a strike from tomorrow to draw the attention of health authorities.
A GMOA spokesman said as many as 200 hospitals face the threat as the government has failed to provide quality medicine and essential equipment while there were issues about the transfer system followed by the Health Ministry.
