The first day of postal voting for the Local Government elections took place in several centres across the country today.
A total of 648,495 postal vote applications have been accepted by the Election Commission.
Postal voting will be taking place on April 25,28 and 29 the as well.
Election monitoring groups said that the number who registered for postal voting was less than the numbers who registered to vote at the Presidential election and Parliamentary elections.
Meanwhile reports from the provinces said that the first day of the election had gone off without incidents.
District Government President and District Election Returning Officer Jasrina Muralitharan said that postal voting in the Batticaloa district took place in a very peaceful manner on the first day.
“Voting took place in all departments and police stations in the Batticaloa district starting at 8.30 am. Government employees participated in voting at the new district secretariat, regional secretariats, zonal education offices, and police stations,” the District Secretary said.
In Batticaloa, 11,554 government employees in the district are eligible to vote.
