The scheduled postal voting for upcoming local government elections is to be delayed due to unavoidable reasons, Election Commission said today. Earlier, the Commission decided to distribute the ballot papers from tomorrow onwards at 1116 centres for postal voting that was to be held on February 22, 23 and 24.
Issuing a statement, Commissioner of Election Saman Sri Rathnayake said that the delay was caused due to reasons "beyond the control" of the Election Commission. Therefore, fresh dates on the postal voting will be notified later.
Meanwhile, the Commission met with representatives of registered political parties today on conducting the polls as planned. The Commission members expressed the view that if issues related to expenditure and printing ballots are not resolved within this week, it will be forced to seek the Court's intervention to proceed further.
