Poultry farmers across the country have strongly opposed moves by the Consumer Affairs Authority to introduce a maximum retail price for eggs.
The farmers claim that the government has not taken into consideration that the cost of production.
The prices of white eggs were reduced to Rs. 43, while brown/red eggs were reduced to Rs. 45, by the Consumer Affairs Authority on Friday through a Gazette notification and as a result those who failed to adhere to the order could be penalized.
Mr Ajith Gunasekara representing the All Island Poultry Farmers Association said they hope to take up the matter with the government on Monday.
A cross section of Poultry farmers said that egg prices should be fixed around Rs 50 considering the cost of production.
They said that poultry feed has been expensive and therefore the government should have consulted them before taking a decision on the egg prices.

Before covid my brothers used to have chicken raising. Now they cannot get the feed for chicken to break even. Vitamin and medicine for prevent chicken illness not available is big problem to start again. Those special products only came as quality import. Lanka product always too poor, lacking and no effect. Please allow for import of what is necessary again.
