The 22nd amendment to the constitution dealing with the term of the President has been gazetted by order of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, was given instructions on Thursday (18) by Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe to hold back publishing the notice in the Gazette about the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution until the presidential election is held.
However, the Justice Minister stated that this decision was made to remove any uncertainty surrounding the holding of the presidential election.
This amendment will modify paragraph (b) of Article 83 of the Constitution regarding the President’s term by changing the words “exceeding six years” to “exceeding five years.”
