President Ranil Wickramasinghe left Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake earlier today for England to attend the coronation ceremony of King Charles III, President Media Division said.
President Wickremesinghe will participate in the coronation ceremony at the invitation of the British Royal Family. The coronation of King Charles III is scheduled to take place at 11 am on Saturday (06) at Westminster Abbey.
King Charles III is to host a special meeting of the Commonwealth Heads of State and Government on May 5, the day before his coronation, after such a meeting was suggested to Buckingham Palace by President Ranil Wickremesinghe through Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland.
President Wickremesinghe recently wrote to Ms. Scotland stating that, with the ascendance to the throne by King Charles, as the new Head of the Commonwealth, it was opportune to evolve a stronger Commonwealth towards which it was timely to deepen interaction on the future vision of the Association and its future role among its members. The Commonwealth currently has a membership of 56 independent nations.
