The Prisons are overcrowded by more than 20,000 prisoners in addition to its capacity, Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara disclosed in Parliament today.
He said that the prisons has facilities to accommodate only about 10,400 prisoners, but currently there about 30,000 inmates.
The Minister responding to question posed by SJB MP Kins Nelson said that about 9,000 of them are remand prisoners.
The Minister said that a Committee has been appointed to look into the possibility of reducing the inmates in remand prisons.
The Minister also disclosed details of the strength of prison officials.
