The Government's two-stage programme to upgrade 796 schools in the country to the status of "National Schools" will commence this month, Education Minister Prof. G.. Peiris stated.
Under the first stage of the programme, 123 schools will be upgraded to National School status while 673 schools will be upgraded to National Schools under the second stage.
Speaking at a development committee meeting in Galle, the Minister further said that Rs 950 million has already been received for the first stage while Rs 1 billion had been received for the second stage. Rs 500 of the funds received for the first stage of the programme will be utilized for renovations at the selected schools while the balance Rs 450 million will be utilized for equipment, he added.
