Protest in front of Canadian HC condemning Trudeau’s ‘Tamil Genocide Day’ remarks

News

A group of individuals attached to an outfit called “Beyond The Struggle” movement staged a protest today in front of the Canadian High Commission condemning the statement made by the Canadian Prime Minister on May 18, marking it as Tamil Genocide Day.

Claiming that the final phases of the war in 2009 were part of a humanitarian operation, Chairman of ‘Beyond the Struggle’ Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thero noted that Sri Lanka marks May 19 as “Victory Day” to commemorate its “war heroes” who laid down their lives in the war while serving the motherland in support of combat operations in bestowing the peace the nation's treasures in the present day.

“We hope that Canada, a state that stands for world peace will not make such false and absurd remarks against Sri Lanka, to achieve its narrow political goals without proper study and unnecessary interference with the independent state of Sri Lanka,” Ven. Thero further added.

Last week office of the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released a statement marking Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day while commemorating the lives lost during the final war.

In his statement, Prime Minister Trudeau said that “Tens of thousands of Tamils lost their lives, including at the massacre in Mullivaikal, with many more missing, injured, or displaced. Our thoughts are with the victims, survivors, and their loved ones, who continue to live with the pain caused by this senseless violence." (Pix by Indika Handuwala)
