QR code system at fuel stations commenced with high hopes

News

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation commenced implementing the QR code system in fuel stations last night raising hopes of consumers that they would receive a guaranteed quota of fuel supplies on a weekly basis.

The system which has been on a trial run will be officially made use from tomorrow replacing the previous system where the last digit on the number plate was used to call over for fuel.

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera tweeted this morning that as many as 1.060 fuel stations have now adopted the system by yesterday.

In order to facilitate those who were finding it difficult to register with the chassis number, registration for the FuelPass with the Revenue license is available now.

Yesterday 746 Fuel stations has used the QR system making it the highest in a day.
Over 1.1 million transactions were conducted over QR.

Meanwhile, companies who were told they could make use of the Business registration have run into a new problem as the system requires a different mobile number for each vehicle. “We have more than 200 vehicles in the fleet, but we do not have a dedicated mobile number for each of vehicle. We are unable to give the driver's number as he too may have a motorcycle or even his own vehicle to register,” a company executive said.

“Besides, if the driver goes on long leave we will have to depend on the driver to get the fuel,” he said.
A spokesman for the ICTA which is responsible for the technical aspects said they were still looking into adding the option of registering such vehicles with one mobile number.

Minister Wijesekara has appealed for people not to crowd up around fuel stations on Monday itself as they could now receive fuel throughout the week, provided they have the quota.

“We are expecting that we will be ensured of a quota, instead of waiting in the queue and leaving without fuel,”  Chandana Silva, a private sector employee said.
