Railway Dept to light up Nine Arch Bridge

News

The Railway Department, in collaboration with the Central Cultural Fund, plans to illuminate the Nine Arch Bridge, also known as the "Bridge in the Sky," as well as the nearby fort.

This initiative aims to enhance one of Sri Lanka's most iconic tourist destinations, attracting both local and foreign visitors.

A preliminary inspection of the project was conducted on the 14th, during which seventy warm white light bulbs were used, as confirmed by Senior Superintendent Engineer of the Railway Department, Dhanushka Dissanayake.

Mr. Dissanayake noted that the 104-year-old Nine Arch Bridge, built in 1921 during British rule, will be illuminated using a Heritage Monument Lighting System to preserve its architectural beauty.

He highlighted that tourists often spend nights near this bridge, contributing to its status as a sought-after destination for international visitors. This lighting project is expected to create a new attraction for the tourism industry.

Moreover, train enthusiasts and photographers will gain the opportunity to capture the Nine Arch Bridge from previously unseen angles.

Mr Dissanayake said  that the bridge, which has undergone a rehearsal lighting, will be permanently illuminated by the first week of August. He also indicated that while seventy light bulbs were used for the initial test, the number could be increased in the future.

This project will be executed under the supervision of the Railway Department's Senior Superintendent Engineer, Dhanushka Dissanayake, alongside the Cultural Fund Officer, following the directives of Railways General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara.
