Marking International Day of the Disappeared which falls today, the relatives of enforced disappeared persons in North and Eastern provinces staged protests demanding truth and justice for the disappearances of their loved ones even after years since the war came to an end in 2009.
Collective of North and East Enforced Disappeared Persons staged protest marches in Jaffna, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Batticaloa, Ampara and Trincomalee reiterating that they will not accept government mechanisms of Office of Missing Persons (OMP) and Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) which were setupped without their inputs or genuinely intended to bring a closure to their grievances.
In a statement issued by the organization, they alleged the government came up with these mechanisms to merely tackle the challenges in UNHRC sessions where Sri Lanka’s past human rights record are under scrutiny.
“We don’t believe in any domestic mechanisms the government comes up with will provide justice to us as its past record has shown us. All successive government mechanims failed miserbaly. Only an international investigation under UN monitoring will ensure justice for us, therefore the international community should intervene on our plight,” the statement added.
