Former Director-General of Archaeology Siran Deraniyagala passed away. He was 79 years.
Dr Deraniyagala served as the DG Archaeology from 1992 to 2001.
He joined the Archaeological Survey Department of Sri Lanka as the Assistant Commissioner in charge of scientific excavations in 1968 and in the following year he oversaw the first excavation at the citadel of Anuradhapura.
The Department of Archaeology and Heritage Management opened its research and teaching museum in September last year, named in honour of Dr Deraniyagala.
